3 Tips for Choosing the Best Course for You at Your English Language School

To get the most out of your education, it is important that you take the proper English course to suit your needs. Here are three tips to make sure you’re in the right class!

1)     Identify What You Want: Are you studying English to communicate better at work? Do you need a certain test score for college or university? Do you want to work or study in an English-speaking country? Or do you simply want to increase you fluency and proficiency for more general purposes? Honestly assessing why you need to improve your English is an important aspect in choosing the best course for you. ILAC, like many other English schools in Canada, offers courses for a wide variety of purposes. General English, Exam preparation (TOEFL, IELTS, CAMBRIDGE FCE & CAE),Business English, Academic Pathway and even Teacher Training with TESOL.

2)     Analyze Your Strengths and Weaknesses: At ILAC we offer several electives to help strengthen areas you need to work on. While it may be tempting to take the speaking elective because you enjoy talking and you’re good at it, maybe you should actually choose a grammar elective because secretly you know that “Your English be to needs better.” (If this sentence looks correct to you, please enrol in the Grammar Elective ;))

3)     Do you “click” with your Teacher? Students have their own learning styles and preferences just as teachers have their own teaching styles and methods. It is important to find a teacher that you “click” with (fit together). Talk to your teacher if you have any concerns. Even if their teaching style isn’t quite right for you, they still want you to be successful and can suggest other teachers you may like.  Also, something as simple as communicating to your teacher what you like brings it to their attention and they will do their best to meet your needs.

It is important to do all three things to ensure you are getting the most out of your English Language Training. Talk to your counselor or other members of your academic department if you have any questions or concerns.

I wish you the best of luck with your English Language success!
