The IELTS test is divided into two types, Academic and General. If you want to study at a college or university in Canada, you need to do an Academic test. If you are planning on immigrating you will take the General test. Both tests contain sections for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and take 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete.

What are the differences between the Academic and the General test?

The Listening test is the same for both Academic and General and has 40 questions. You have 30 minutes to complete the test, plus 10 minutes to transfer your answers.

The Reading part for both tests has 40 questions and lasts for 1 hour. The questions are different for both tests  – Academic uses materials from journals and other academic sources, while the General test uses materials that are from newspapers, books or other every day sources.

The Writing part for both tests has two questions and you have one hour to do both. In the Academic test you must describe what you see in a graph/table/diagram/chart. For the General test, you will be asked to respond to a situation or to request information. In both you will be asked to write an essay in response to a problem, an argument or a specific point of view.

The Speaking part is the same for both the Academic or the General test. It is 11-14 minutes long with three parts that include general questions about yourself, speaking about a particular topic and a discussion.

Paperbased or Computer-delivered testit’s your choice.

The ILAC IELTS Test Centre in Vancouver offers both the Paper-based and Computer-delivered IELTS testThere are no differences between the two tests, except that you can receive your Computer-delivered test results faster, within 5-7 days.
