Application to Arrival: A Step-by-Step Guide to Learn Professional English

ILAC students speaking with ILAC staff

Individuals who wish to study professional English at ILAC must submit an online application, complete payment, receive a confirmation letter/LOA, apply for a visa and/or study permit if required, prepare for travel and housing, fly to Canada, and attend classes.

Only 10% of employees with limited English skills feel they fully express themselves at work. The other 72% know that better English would make their jobs easier. That’s why the majority of the global workforce is clamouring for professional English training to fill this critical skills gap.

If you’re ready to join a professional English language training program in Canada, you’re in the right place. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire enrollment process at ILAC, from online application to settling in Toronto or Vancouver.

Step 1: Choose an ILAC Program

ILAC offers several English communication training programs for professionals. Choose one that aligns with your career goals, English level, and learning needs.

Here’s an overview of ILAC’s adult programs:

Step 4: Apply for a Visa and/or Study Permit

Most international students need a visa or study permit to study in Canada. The type required depends on your passport and program length:

For programs six months or less, you need:

  • a visitor visa or temporary resident visa (applies to visa-required foreign nationals travelling by air, bus, train, or boat)
  • an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) (applies to visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling by air)
For programs longer than six months, you need:

  • a study permit (once approved, you’ll automatically receive your visitor visa or eTA: no need to apply separately)

How can I get a visitor visa for Canada?

To get a visitor visa for Canada:

  1. Prepare your documents.
    1. Required: Identification, i.e., passport
    2. Optional/Recommended (to support your application): Travel history, itinerary, bank statements, authority to release personal information to a designated individual (IMM 5475)
