Dimitri Sorochenko came from Russia. He studied in the Pre-Degree Certificate and TOEFL Preparation Programs at ILAC, and he is now attending University of Toronto’s Commerce Program.
The Pathways UPDATE: What do you think about ILAC’s University Pathway Programs?
Dimitri: : Counseling helped me a lot. Without the Director of Pathways’ direction, I would be lost. TOEFL classes as well as Pre-Degree improved my ability in English comprehension and academic writing. My teacher taught me a lot. She reviewed our papers so well. I really loved my TOEFL classes and Pre-degree altogether. I thought it’s a great opportunity for me to take advantage of such a program for academic English where I can learn many skills to use in my university education and later on in my career.

The Pathways UPDATE: What do you think about the
Pre-Degree Program (ILAC’s English for Academic Purposes)?
Dimitri: It really helped me. I attended some Seminars as a part of my orientation in the University of Toronto, I showed the papers that I did during my pre-degree classes to my professor, he said that I did a great job in writing those research papers and the pre-degree program was apparently very useful.
When I first start the program, I had no clue if this program would be a good fit for me. I was pleasantly surprised. I learned so much. The education system is very different from Russia, having been exposed to the Canadian education system and methodology and learning all about is super. Furthermore, we did learn the business,science, humanity and art terminology which was very crucial overall.

The Pathways UPDATE: Do you feel your teacher is knowledgeable in academic English teaching?
Dimitri: She was very knowledgeable in academic English. Plus, she always gave me full support and feedback during class. I was very happy with her ability to teach. How to write research papers…structure my essays, etc.
The Pathways UPDATE: Would you recommend ILAC’s Pre-Degree Certificate Program to your friends?
Dimitri: Yes, definitely… both ESL and Pre-Degree Certificate Programs! I talked to three friends already about it. I will continue to tell all about it. Essentially, it teaches not only academic English in general, it helps to build an academic foundation for international students that I will appreciate so much during my education and later on. It’s a definite path for an academic success! As long as you study hard, anything is possible!
