STUDENT INTERVIEW

Akakiy CHIKVINIDZE came from Russia to improve his English with ILAC. He joined the Pre-Degree Program and is seeking entry to the University of Windsor for Honors in Business Administration Program.

ILAC: What do you think about ILAC’s Pathway Programs?

Akakiy: I found it really useful actually. Pathway department assisted and counseled me along the way with university program choices and processes, because, we, international students, don’t know anything about Canadian universities/ colleges. It’s very comforting to find help and get answers for my questions right away.

ILAC: What do you think about Pre-degree Program (ILAC’s English for academic purposes)?

Akakiy: I think pre-degree program will help students accomplish their goals in universities. It’s a longer preparation and very intense and challenging at times, but that’s the way it is supposed to be, we learn all the skills we can use at a university.

ILAC:
Do you feel your teacher is knowledgeable in academic English teaching?

Akakiy: Yes, very much so. Our teacher is very experienced and knowledgeable. Our main focus in the class is essay writing (lots and lots of them). We prepare presentations in power point, we present them in front of the class. She also teaches us how to write a research paper. We form discussion/debate groups and discuss about a topic. I think it also helps improve our English speaking skills, interpersonal skills and self confidence. Personally, my self-confidence has improved, my writing skills and vocabulary have improved and I can express myself much better orally as well as in writing. I feel like I am in real university lecture.

ILAC: Would you recommend the ILAC’s Pre-Degree Certificate Program to your friends?

Akakiy: Definitely, I benefited from it greatly. As an international student, I was concerned about the transition into a Canadian university. I am grateful having the opportunity to study at ILAC. The friendly staff at ILAC was available to help me every step of the way with my study options and career counseling. I will recommend ILAC to all my friends if they want to follow my foot steps.

ILAC: Thanks Akakiy, it was a pleasure to have you here at ILAC!
