STUDENT INTERVIEW

Kely Pinheiro de Andrade came from Brazil to improve her English at ILAC. She joined the Pre-Degree Program and got accepted to George Brown College for the Post-Graduate program for Strategic Relationship Program.

The Pathways UPDATE: What do you think about ILAC’s University Pathway Programs?

Kely: : I think it’s super. When I was first offered this program by my agent, I could not believe how great it would be for me, a direct entry to a post graduate program without providing TOEFL or IELTS. I thought it’s a great opportunity a 4 months preparation for academic English.

The Pathways UPDATE: What do you think about the Pre-Degree Program (ILAC’s English for Academic Purposes)?

Kely: When I first arrived to ILAC, I took the ILAC test, my level was pre-advanced. I studied very hard and skipped the levels and started the Pre-Degree program. When I first started the program, I had no clue if this program would be a good fit for me. I was pleasantly surprised. I learned so much. I finished university back in Brazil and the university system was quite different from the Canadian one. It’s a great preparation and exposure for Canadian higher education system that I benefited from immensly. We have learned the Canadian study and research methods and techniques i.e. MLA which is The Modern Language Association (MLA) method of referencing, widely used for writing papers and citing sources that I was not familiar with before, plus research and presentation skills how to write an essay, study skills etc.

Furthermore, we have been learning the business, science, humanity and art terminology that I am going to use later in my post-grad education. Also what I like is that we are taking the TOEFL practice test as a final exam and that’s a great way of testing our English level in the end.

The Pathways UPDATE: Do you feel your teacher is knowledgeable in academic English teaching?

Kely: Yes, she is full of knowledge in academic English. She had worked at York University as an assistant professor. She did her masters and taught as an assistant professor at York University and she is very experienced in academic teaching methodology. Plus, she always gives her full support and feedback.

The Pathways UPDATE: Would you recommend ILAC’s Pre-Degree Certificate Program to your friends?

Kely: Big yes! Essentially, the Pre-Degree Program teaches not only academic English in general, it helps to build an academic foundation for international students who will benefit from it in their future education at a postsecondary institution. It’s a definite path for academic success!

The Pathways UPDATE: Thanks Kely, it was great to have you here at ILAC!

Kely: My pleasure!
