ESL CANADA

The Canadian Association of Private Language Schools (CAPLS) and the Canada Language Council (CLC) members have voted in favour of creating one language training association in Canada. The two associations signed a letter of intent during their annual general meetings in Victoria on February 23rd, 2007.

The new association – yet to be named, will reinforce the identity of the Canadian language training sector by uniting the existing CLC Quality Assurance Scheme as the basis for accreditation, and the marketing, organizational and advocacy strength from CAPLS to form the basis for the new association.

A task force composed by members of both CAPLS and CLC will meet regularly to discuss an action plan and details for the merging. The new association is scheduled to be formed in February 2008.

“As the two associations start to work together more cooperatively, it would seem that the next logical step to strengthen the industry would be to unite the industry into one strong association. With a strong language training association in place, future discussions could focus on activities that bring international recognition to our industry.”

Virginia Taylor
Co-President, CLC
Member of the Task Force on Planning and Priorities.
