David Barbosa Peixoto “When I decided to come to Toronto in order to develop my English skills I wanted to do something more than the regular and an Internship matched my wishes.

I first contacted ILAC and I was introduced to Wish Toronto. They were very supportive and promptly found me an interview. I’ve chosen a medium-size corporation expecting to have a good overview of the business and I got it at The Messengers International. They gave me the opportunity to work in different areas in the company, from billing, collection and logistics.

Now I know I had a real Canadian Experience.”

Yoko Hibi “Before taking the Internship Program, I was so nervous because I would be the only Japanese among lots of Canadian. However, I enjoyed the atmosphere while I was taking the Internship because there was a big difference between the Japanese and Canadian work environment.

Even though I couldn’t have a job with a lot of responsibilities because my internship was only a month, it was a nice to experience the Canadian working style and kindness.

Working at the front desk at a company is not easy if your listening and speaking skills are not sharp but it is worth to try to improve these communication skills with native speakers.”

Eleonora Kim “Thanks so much to the staff of ILAC for making me satisfied with my internship program. It was a pleasure working with Luis from Wish Toronto, who has always provided me with appropriate information from which I could make my decisions.

I am completely satisfied with company ‘Visa connection’ in which I have been working as a consultant during 8 weeks. Although it was short time, I have learned enough and have got a good experience. I improved my comprehension skills in English also I learned how to work in this industry and with Canadian people. I was in a good working environment and I felt encouragement from co-workers.

I highly recommend Wish Toronto to anyone who wants to do internship program at ILAC.”

Goar Ovsepyan “Having worked as a teacher of English in Russia for three years, I thought of applying my knowledge and experience on a different level. An internship in an English speaking country was a great possibility for me to improve my English as well as to broaden my horizons for successful contribution to what I will do in educational field in Russia.

When deciding to take an internship at a Canadian company, I didn’t know how it would work for me since it’s a new country work place rules. However, with great support and help of Melissa Fidelino from Wish Toronto and ILAC, I was accepted at a company where I gained the experience I needed. The 4 weeks internship at The Fraser Institute gave me a unique chance to get to know Canadian business and the people in a very friendly environment.

The Fraser Institute’s Children First program was a good fit for me since it works in the field of education helping different families to choose a better school for their children. Getting in touch with different companies both for promotional and charity purposes made the internship experience very exciting and useful.

I am very glad that I managed to use my knowledge of foreign languages for the program’s benefit. For successful cooperation with Russian and Armenian churches and other organizations, I translated the program’s fact sheet and made contacts with them for further promotion for low-income families’ benefit.

Communicating with my colleagues, taking part in the office meeting, assisting in event planning gave me a great opportunity to improve my English and learn things that will certainly help me to build my career."

Seong Ok Choi “Wherever I work, I want to be professional. I have never regarded this intern job as a temporary one in a short period. Now I can see the environment and mood in the North American company, in addition, I can understand how the workers do. I can feel the difference.

I modified the computer program codes for the benefit of customers, thinking on the side of the users to make the program faster and easier to handle.

Besides, I made dozens of documents which were the outputs of my work. I guess any new worker can easily understand what the project that I joined is and what the project comprised of.

I knew that Wish Toronto had just begun its job in August. I think the workers made a good job on schedule even though there were bunch of things to set up for Wish Toronto. I especially like the smile of the workers. I wish Wish Toronto success! Thanks."

Sung Woon Song “It has been already 2 months since I started to work at The Heart and Stroke Foundation and I have completed my 8 weeks internship at the HSFO. I had good time with nice people and gained useful experiences.

Actually, I had my doubt about an internship program. I thought that interns would do only office chores because people who apply for internship programs are usually university students from other countries and that means they don’t have work experience and even their first language is not English, at least I was, so I did not expect to learn many things but English, but apparently I was wrong.

People from HSFO were willing to help and teach me and I was obviously one part of the office members and that was more than I expected. They did not ask me to do office chores and they were always more than happy to listen to my bad English.

Things that I’ve gained from my internship are not only English. First, I’ve learned business terms and business ways to make forms in English. It’s about a language but it’s not just about language skills. I have native fluency in Korean but I don’t know how to write business letters or forms because I’ve never learned but now I have confidence in writing a business letter or making business forms in English.

Second, I’ve learned how to use MS word and excel. I knew how to use them but I had no clue how many functions those programs had.

My host company did not just ask me to do data entry. They let me do the whole progress, from finding information to making and sending letters, and just helped and taught me when I needed help from them. I think I’ve gained valuable experience through my internship. I want to thank HSFO and Wish Toronto.”

Gorkem Ozder “My name is Gorkem. I’m from Turkey. I have been here for nine months. I came to Toronto to learn English. I chose to learn English at ILAC. I started from beginner 3.While I was going to Advanced 2, I was thinking of taking an internship. Because I wanted to see my English when I work and speak with Canadian people. I needed to make sure whether my English improved or not. In addition, I want to have a job experience in Toronto. That’s why I decided that the best thing about improving English and business skills is taking internship program.

Then I started to search internship program. At that time, I heard about WISH TORONTO which is working with ILAC. I met with Johnny S. Cha who works in WISH TORONTO.

I asked him all my thoughts and questions. He explained everything. I had to prepare to interview. I did practice with Johnny before the interview. I can honestly say that he always helped and encouraged me.

Because during the preparing time you can be so nervous. It is important who is helping you? After that, my first interview went pretty well. Two days later, I started to work at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. I’m really glad that I worked at MTCC.

First of all, everybody was so kind and helpful. My manager was explaining every each job to me. I was feeling that my English and business skills were improving day by day. I was learning lots of different things in each day. I was paying attention to be punctual, hard-working, organized and keeping all information.

My duties:
  • Check an F/A that shows organization plan
  • Prepare the schedule, assignments for staff
  • You have to check next day’s schedule with assignment for accuracy
  • At the end of the week, when the schedule and work assignments from the previous week get taken down from the case downstairs by the scanner; they need to be saved and placed in the box on the shelf by on desk in case there are any staff challenges
  • Designed and delivered menus
  • Contact with Accounting, Event Service and Showtech.
  • Mostly departments I need to contact; Accounting, Event Services, Technical Services, Cash Officer, Kitchen, Human Resources…
I have completed 5 weeks in MTCC. In my opinion, I had a great experience also I got a reference letter which helps me so much when I apply to companies. I deeply recommend taking internship program.”

Osman Ozbarutcu “I took a 28-week English Program at ILAC Vancouver. I’ve started in the Low Beginner level and studied all the way to Pre-Advanced. After completing my English program at ILAC I thought I could take advantage of my learning’s with an Internship. I had previous work experience in Turkey and I thought it could be beneficial to work in a foreign company as an engineer.

I’ve started my Internship Program in March 2007 after the preparation and some interviews with some different companies. On the first day, by the time I arrived in the company, my desk was already set up and I did a tour to meet everyone…that was it I was in. I had studied English and I got my Bachelor’s degree, now it was time to contribute to my host company as much as I could.

I had worked at the quality control department. I would say that my level of English is good enough to communicate with people and I do not hesitate to ask things second time, just need to remember that you used to speak with your friends and teachers and now you simply speak with your colleagues.

I enjoyed and gained lots of experience with my internship.

We all want the same thing, the ability to speak English. Joining an internship program is the one way that helps this process. I want to thank all of ILAC staff members for the extensive assistance. And for those who study English or consider it, good luck and check-out ILAC.”
